How to View and Edit EXIF Data in Your Photos

Every photo you take is carrying a hidden diary: when it was shot, with what camera, at which settings, and often exactly where. This embedded information is called EXIF data, and learning to read — and edit — it is one of the most useful photography skills nobody teaches.

What’s in there: camera make and model, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash status, timestamp, and often GPS coordinates.

How to view it: On Windows, right-click a photo, choose Properties, and open the Details tab. On macOS, open in Preview and press Command-I. On phones, the photo app’s info view shows key fields. The catch: built-in viewers show only a subset and won’t let you change anything. For the full picture — all fields, GPS on a map, and editing — a dedicated tool is better. A free EXIF viewer runs in your browser and shows every embedded field, including location data plotted on a map, with options to edit or remove fields before you share. It handles batches too.

When to edit EXIF: fix wrong timestamps after traveling across time zones; add missing location data to photos from cameras without GPS; remove sensitive data like GPS coordinates before posting publicly; correct author and copyright fields for professional work.

EXIF as a learning tool: study the EXIF data of your own best shots. When you capture an image you love, check what settings produced it. Over time, this builds an instinct no tutorial can shortcut.

A word on privacy: EXIF data has burned people before — home addresses leaked through listing photos, locations exposed. Before uploading photos to sites that don’t strip metadata, check what’s embedded. Stripping EXIF takes seconds and is good hygiene for anything shared publicly.

Make it a habit: view what’s there, fix what’s wrong, remove what shouldn’t travel. Your photos carry more than pixels — make sure they’re carrying the right story.
