Everyone has seen those photos of Manali buried in snow. Fewer people talk about the trips where the snow never showed up, or where the road to Solang was shut by lunchtime.

If you are planning a trip to Manali in winter, this guide tells you what the season is really like, so you can plan around it.
When Is Winter in Manali?
Winter runs from December to February. Some snow can come as early as late November in the higher areas, and March mornings are still cold, but December to February is when the town feels like a proper hill station in the cold.
The three months are quite different from each other.
December: Cold, festive, and crowded around Christmas and New Year. Snow is possible at Solang, Gulaba and Sethan, but Manali town itself may stay dry. The rush is heaviest from about 20 December to 2 January.
January: Snowfall chances go up. Many travellers find January the best balance of snow, atmosphere and open cafes. The Winter Carnival is usually held this month, with local music, dance and food stalls.
February: Often the most reliable month for snow, and the crowds are thinner than in December. If snow matters more to you than festive vibes, pick this.
One honest warning: snowfall cannot be promised. A trip can land right after a storm or in a dry week. Keep a flexible plan, and keep a day or two spare.
How Cold Does It Get?
Daytime in Manali can be pleasant if the sun is out. After sunset, it gets sharply cold, and nights often fall below freezing. At Solang and beyond the Atal Tunnel, expect it to feel much colder. Do not trust a single “average temperature” number from the internet. Check the forecast a few days before you leave.
Where to See Snow Near Manali
Solang Valley: About 13 to 14 km from the town and the easiest snow outing. Skiing, snow play, and paragliding when the weather allows are all run here. Go early, ideally before 8 AM, because the road jams up and conditions change as the day goes on.
Gulaba and Sethan: Good backup snow points when Solang is crowded. Whether you can go depends on that day’s road status.
Atal Tunnel and Sissu: The 9-km Atal Tunnel opened in October 2020 and keeps Lahaul connected through winter. Sissu, on the far side, often has more snow than Manali town. It is roughly 38 to 40 km from Manali. But the tunnel being open does not mean the roads leading up to it are clear. After heavy snowfall, tourist vehicles can get stopped near Solang. Treat Sissu as a bonus, not a promise, and ask your driver or hotel the night before.
Old Manali, Hadimba Temple and Mall Road: If the roads are closed, these still make a good day. Hadimba Temple, surrounded by deodar trees, is lovely in the cold, and the Old Manali cafes are cosy with a fire going.
What About Rohtang Pass?
This is the question we hear most. Rohtang is closed by snow in winter, so do not plan it for December to February. The usual reopening is around late spring. Anyone selling you a Rohtang snow trip in January is not being straight with you. Solang, Sethan, and the tunnel side are your realistic options.

How to Reach Manali in Winter
By road from Delhi. About 530 km and usually 12 to 13 hours. In winter, the plains section can be foggy in the early morning, and the hill road after Mandi can ice up on shaded bends. A driver who knows the route is worth it. If you self-drive, keep snow chains and drive only in daylight.
By flight. Bhuntar Airport (Kullu) is about 50 km from Manali and the fastest option, but winter weather can delay or cancel flights. Book a morning flight, keep a buffer day on the return, and have Chandigarh in mind as a backup.
By bus. Volvo and HRTC buses run from Delhi through winter. It is cheaper, but slow, and delays are common after snowfall.
Is Manali in Winter Cheaper?
Partly. From mid-November to the first half of December, and again after the first week of January, hotel rates are low, and rooms are easy to find. But from Christmas to the New Year week, prices jump, and booking late means few options. If you want savings with snow, choose late January or February.
Where to Stay
Central Manali and Old Manali are best for cafes and walking. Solang or Aleo-side stays give a more peaceful feel but can be harder to reach when it snows. Whatever you choose, check for heating (room heaters or a blower), hot water that actually works, and a road that is drivable in snow. A cheap room with no heating is not a bargain.
Packing List
- Thermals (inner and outer layers)
- A heavy down jacket
- Waterproof shoes with good grip
- Gloves, a woollen cap and warm socks
- Sunglasses, because snow glare is strong
- Moisturiser and lip balm
- A power bank, since cold drains batteries fast
- Any regular medicines you take
Should You Book a Package?
If you are going for the first time, a package takes away a lot of stress. Winter roads, snow chains, police checks, and last-minute closures are easier when a local team handles them. Look for one that gives you a backup plan for a closed day, uses a driver familiar with snow, and is honest about snow chances. Compare a few of the best Manali tour packages on inclusions, not only price, and ask what happens if Solang or Sissu is closed on your dates.
Quick Tips Before You Go
- Check road and weather updates the evening before every outing.
- Start early. Mornings are clearer and less crowded.
- Keep at least one flexible day in your plan.
- Do not drive in snow without experience.
- Carry some cash, because network and UPI can be patchy on the Lahaul side.
- Pace yourself on day one. The cold can be tiring.
Final Thoughts
Manali in winter can be wonderful: snow, quiet cafes, warm food and mountain views. It works best when you travel with realistic expectations, a flexible plan, and the right clothes. Pick your month based on what you want: February for snow, January for atmosphere, early December for savings, and the trip will be much easier.
